The wonderful thing about the development of blogs and the content marketing industry is that it has inspired more people to write.
Once the domain of journalists alone, now every business is encouraged to maintain a consistent and high quality blog.
As a journalist, I admit a certain level of skepticism when blogs first emerged.
You see, for me, writing is a skill - something that I have learnt and developed over many years.
In the early days, I worried that the rise of blogging would lead to an overwhelming mass of content - drowning quality in a sea of dross.
You could argue, of course, that this fear has come true.
We are overwhelmed by content today and not all of it is worth our time. Now, when I come across a high quality article (regardless of its length) it comes as such a welcome surprise.
And this is where the gold lies. If you run a blog that is considered, strategic and relevant to your audience, your blog can stand apart from all the other noisy content that is vying for attention.
The big question is, therefore, how can you create consistent, high quality blog posts?
The solution is to get strategic. You can do this by:
Blogging Strategy - Be Consistent
Whether you have a business blog or if you are planning to start one, consistency is key. Your audience will appreciate your consistency and will start to look forward to your future posts.
Be honest with yourself regarding your time and decide upon a strategy that works for you and your business.
There is no point in blogging every day if you find, two weeks down the line, that you cannot cope with this schedule. It is far better to blog once a week and keep to that frequency.
Blogging Strategy - Be Relevant
The fastest way to a successful blog is to choose the topics of most interest to your audience. Don’t be afraid to ask your customers and colleagues what questions that they would like answered or what subjects they would like to read about.
Keep in touch with your audience and be relevant in your blog.
Blogging Strategy - Be Informed
Your blog can be an effective business tool if it manages to find the right audience.
In addition to being relevant, your blog posts should also be informative and, where possible, include useful data and statistics.
Readers really respond to statistics - especially if you use this information to back up your own argument.
Blogging Strategy - Be Disciplined
I mentioned this at the start, but I truly believe that writing is a craft. The more you write, the more skilled you will become at creating pieces of which you can be proud.
Writing is not always easy and you need to be disciplined. By this I mean that you should try to avoid a stream of consciousness style. Whether you use your blog to make a point, win an argument or tell a story, always have a plan.
For example, before you start to write, break your blog down into four pieces:
- Introduction - explain what your blog will be about
- Argument - make your point
- Research / Information - support your argument with a useful strategy or with data and statistics
- Conclusion - weigh up your argument and reach a conclusion
Then, once you have followed your plan and written your post, go back and proof read it several times. Even better - ask a friend or colleague to proof read your piece.
You will likely make many edits at this stage - don't be afraid to whittle away at your post in order to elevate it to the highest standard.
Blogging Strategy - Be Committed
Blogging is a lonely business at first. You can start to worry that no one is reading your precious posts and this can be pretty disheartening.
However, make a commitment to your blog - keep going and it will soon prove to be a powerful business tool.
I hope that you have found this post of interest.
